WEINGUT
STADT KREMS
Krems, Austria

Wine
production in Kremstal, the area around the city of
Krems, can be traced back to the 5th Century when Roman
legionnaires are recorded as planting vines along the
banks of the Danube. More recently the area has begun
to be recognised for the fantastic purity and quality
of the white wines produced here.
The Weingut Stadt Krems is an ancient estate owned by
the town of Krems with over 32 hectares of vineyards.
Its land has come from two main sources. In 1210 the
Babenberger Duke Leopold VI founded a Citizen's Hospital
in Krems and bequeathed it a large amount of vineyards.
In 1452 more land was bequeathed to the estate by the
Imperial Burgrave Ulrich von Dachsberg. Until 1744 the
wines were made in the gothic vaults of the town hall
but for the past couple of centuries have been produced
in a more modern, convenient facility!
| The
emphasis at Stadt Krems is firmly on quality in
the vineyards and in the winery. Environmentally
aware techniques are used to control pests. Crop
thinning and severe pruning are practiced to reduce
yields. Vinification is carried out in stainless
steel, temperature controlled tanks to maintain
freshness and clarity in the wines. |

While
many of the wines are from single grape varieties from
single vineyards, K1 is a fascinating experiment where
Gruner Veltliner has been blended with Chardonnay, a
proportion of which was barrel fermented. The result
is a subtly spicy, complex and delicious wine.
The
credo of Stadt Krems is "technology-as much as
necessary; nature-as much as possible." Elegant,
intense and long, the wines of Stadt Krems are beautifully
made examples of the best of modern Austrian wine.
