Uccelliera is small grower with a growing reputation for crafting some of the finest wines from the prestigious Montalcino region of Tuscany.
Andrea Cortonesi’s family have always worked the land but it was not until 1986 that he had the opportunity to purchase this small 6 hectare estate along with the small farmhouse (known as the bird house…uccelliera) that he realised his dream of producing wines that reflected the timeless, balanced character of the environment around him.
The winery was built in the basement of the farm, is small but perfectly formed with only fine French and Slovenian oak to influence the flavours of the particular Montalcino clone of Sangiovese. A high density of vines, very attentive care in the vineyards and manual harvesting ensure perfect ripeness and in turn a wonderfully expressive, aromatic character to the wines. Producing just 3 wines, these are distinctive, honest wines that have real personality.

Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Uccelliera
The wines of Montalcino in Tuscany have become world renowned and prices have moved skywards as a result. However, Brunello’s little brother, Rosso di Montalcino offers similar quality but better value. Made from 100% Sangiovese selected from the Montalcino region, this wine spends 8 months in fine oak to produce a fragrant, characterful red with firm structure and a wonderful melange of violets, plums and tar. |

Rapace Toscana IGT, Uccelliera
Andrea Cortonesi’s dream of owning his own estate in Montalcino became reality in 1986 and, since then, he has been quietly gaining a superb reputation for his Brunello. Here he departs from the usual to make a wonderful blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. 18 months in barriques lends this wine some well integrated wood spice and vanillin to counterbalance the rich, savoury, damson and plum fruit character. |

Brunello di Montalcino DOC, Uccelliera
When Andrea Cortonesi bought this little estate in 1986, Brunello was only just coming to the fore as one of Italy’s (and the world’s) great wines. Since then he has been forging a reputation for making wonderful, artisan wines from the cellar underneath the farm. This wine uses 100% Sangiovese selected from the Montalcino clone which is then vinified for 24 months in fine French and Slovenian oak – eventually yielding a wine that has superb, lifted savoury fruit, supple, silky fruit on the palate and a long long finish. |
