PULPIT ROCK
Reibeek West, Swartland, South Africa |
<< BACK |

Pulpit Rock is the latest winery to join the growing band of acclaimed producers in the Riebeek Valley region, one hour north east of Cape Town. Situated in the foothills of the Kasteelberg mountains, the winery takes its name from a craggy outcrop traditionally known as Pulpit Rock which is populated by a vocal group of baboons. Spectacularly situated and well kitted out with the latest technology, this is a special place for making wine.
The Brink Family, who own Pulpit Rock, are large agricultural landholders in both Namibia and South Africa as well as being one of the largest pig breeders in the Cape! They are large vineyard holders too and the ambition to make wine themselves has been burning since the 1900s when old Grandpa Brink was asked to be winemaker at Groot Constantia. Though that never came to pass, Grandpa Brink's son, Ernest decided in 2003 that now was the time to finally begin making wine. With the help of his two sons and the hiring of winemaker Piet Kleinhans, Pulpit Rock was born.
2004 saw the first wines being made at the shiny new winery and they immediately recieved massive critical acclaim and a stash of high profile awards. Utilising the ripe, lush grapes and judicious use of high quality oak, Piet crafts wines of immediate appeal, great texture and no little power.

PINOTAGE RESERVE, PULPIT ROCK
Intense, brooding and complex, this is not your run of the mill "drink me drink me" Pinotage. This is altogether more serious! Almost opaque in colour with a nose of ripe dark fruits, mocha, spice and seared meats. The palate is lush, yet taught...supple yet well structured, full of juicy damson and bramble fruit but with complex layers of subtle oak followed by a memorably long finish. |
