It’s not everyone that starts their wine drinking career with a taste of Chateau D’Yquem 1962 but, as a youngster, Paul Hobbs passion for wine was ignited when his father brought home a bottle and poured it into paper cups for all the family to taste!

Having convinced his father to uproot the apple orchard and plant a vineyard, Paul went on to study both in France and California before landing a job as enologist at Robert Mondavi which led to Paul working as head enologist on the Opus One team. Further experience as winemaker at Simi followed and Paul’s horizons expanded to Argentina where, with Nicolas Catena, he worked on making the country’s first world class Chardonnay.

Outside consultancies gave Paul an understanding of vineyards and terroir that he wanted to use himself so, in 1991, Paul founded the eponymous winery.

That sought after 'Sense of Place'

Paul set out to produce small-lot, hand crafted, vineyard designate wines - working to capture that elusive “sense of place”. Staying true to his initial goals, Paul’s range has expanded beyond the inaugural three wines but he has stayed true to his philosophy.

Paul Hobbs’ wines strive to create exuberant, intensely flavoured, richly textured wines of structure and balance, which reflect the specific personality of each vineyard site. In order to achieve this, meticulous care is taken in the vineyard to ensure that the fruit is truly ripe whilst remaining balanced and the most nuanced expression of terroir.

Without exception, the wines are truly remarkable for their balance, intensity and sense of place. They are wines of great personality and finesse and, quite rightly, have been much lauded by the global wine world.

20th Anniversary

The year 2011 is a milestone for Paul Hobbs WInery, they are celebrating their 20th Anniversary and what a two decades it has been - named the most influential winemaker in California and receiving the magical 100 point score from Robert Parker - truly testament to the exceptional levels of finesse and personality we have come to expect from the ´truffle hunting dog´.

Chardonnay, Russian River

Chardonnay, Russian River
Richly textured, aromatic and bright, this appellation blend is brilliant pale straw in colour and scented with lemongrass, white flowers and a touch of orange rind. A sleek, silky palate reveals pure, focussed flavours of Gala apple, pear and lemon meringue pie while yeasty elements add richness and complexity.

Pinot Noir, Russian River

Pinot Noir, Russian River
The cooler Russian River Valley allows for great flavour accumulation and superb delicacy of flavour for Pinot. Silky and well balanced, dark red cherry and anise with floral notes harmonise with plum, boysenberry and Darjeeling tea over the long, expressive finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
The cuvee of top Napa Valley properties produces a powerhouse Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of blackcurrant and tobacco reveal themselves as this deep black garnet offering opens up in the glass. A dense, viscous palate coasts the mount with boysenberry, roasted coffee and a hint of vanillin. Chewy tannins and notes of black pepper mark the finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Dr Crane Vineyard, St Helena, Napa Valley
Deep black-crimson colour with inviting aromas of boysenberry, black cherry and dried herbs. Despite significant tannic structure, the palate is already showing generous concentrated flavours of perfectly ripened black and red fruits interlaced with graphite, freshly baked bread and white pepper. The intense fruit and spice elements persist through a memorable finish, complemented by firm tannins and a touch of acidity.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Beckstoffer to Kalon Vineyard, Napa Valley

Cabernet Sauvignon, Beckstoffer to Kalon Vineyard, Napa Valley
A legendary vineyard and a legendary wine. Inky black garnet colour carries enticing aromas of redcurrant and tobacco leaf to introduce a weighty, complex, seemlessly integrated wine. The deeply textured palate displays a rich interplay of blackberry, cassis, graphite and mocha with notes of cedar, espresso, lavender and smoke. Big, ripe, fine-grained tannins grace a lengthy finish.
