One can’t help to be energised by Dave Hidden’s infectious enthusiasm and drive and, as the owner of top Stellenbosch producer, Hidden Valley, he has an awful lot to be enthusiastic about!
Trained as a winemaker but disillusioned by the industry at the time, Dave Hidden built up an impressive business in the gas industry before returning to finally make his mark on South African wine by purchasing a stunning estate on the side of the Helderburg mountain, right in the heart of Stellenbosch. Until recently, Hidden Valley has been low profile but massive personal investment has meant that 2006 is the year in which Hidden Valley will take South African wine by storm.
Construction of a new state of the art winery is approaching completion with Chris Kelly, a Kiwi who was former head winemaker for Stellenbosch Vineyards, being engaged to manage the winery and to gain a world class reputation for the estate’s wines. Early indications are that he is bang on target and his 2006 Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc is an absolute stunner – pungent, herbaceous, full of varietal character and without doubt one of the finest the Cape has produced. Equally promising are Kelly’s reds which are showing great finesse and elegance.
Re-packaged and re-launched in September 2006 Hidden Valley will consist of 3 wines initially; Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Pinotage. From the same stable, Kelly has also crafted some great value, characterful wines under the clever “Hidden Agenda” label. Soft, fleshy shiraz is paired with a ripe, tangy Chenin Viognier blend.

HIDDEN AGENDA CHENIN VIOGNIER, HIDDEN VALLEY
A cracking new blend that utilises the crisp, tangy character of appley chenin coupled with the more richly textured, apricot nature of viognier. The result is decidedly scrumptious and appetising! |

HIDDEN AGENDA SHIRAZ VIOGNIER, HIDDEN VALLEY
The Hidden Agenda here is that some of the proceeds from this wine go towards social housing for winery workers. What is not so hidden is the lovely spicy, blackberry fruit which mingles with the aromatic notes coming from viognier. Sophisticated yet delicious drinking. |

SAUVIGNON BLANC, HIDDEN VALLEY
Sure to become one of the star sauvignons from the Cape, Hidden Valley's Sauvignon Blanc is a stunning example with intense gooseberry, guava and blackcurrant leaf character. Crisp, tangy and beautifully balanced and rounded this is long, complex and intensely appetising |

PINOTAGE, HIDDEN VALLEY
South Africa's native grape often has a few "rough edges" but this cleverly constructed wine uses a little viognier to soften the style and give a more voluptuous character. Rich, ripe berry fruit is complimented by savoury, lightly charred wood and hints of spice. Lovely, silky texture and a warm, rich finish |

SHIRAZ, HIDDEN VALLEY
This rising star of the Cape wine scene, exhibits intense, dark ripe fruit character structured with silky tannins and a complex texture. Full bodied but not overpowering with lifted aromas of mulberry, cassis and all spice followed by a long lingering finish |
