Michael Havens is the driving force behind a quality winery that is beginning to receive the kind of attention that it rightly deserves. Recently voted as one of the top 10 Syrah producers in the U.S and a pioneer of Napa Merlot, Havens make stunning, well balanced, cultured wines. Michael and Kathy Havens started out making wines as a hobby whilst Michael was studying for his doctorate in Humanities.

Various "strategic" moves later, Michael was able to spend time studying at U.C Davis and in 1984 Havens Wines was initiated properly, with the help of long term friends Jon and Russell Scott.

For some years Michael honed his winemaking skills working for others before finally turning his own label into a full time pursuit in the 90's.

The winery concentrates its efforts on making world class syrah and merlot with fruit sourced from some of the best growers in Napa, Carneros and the Wooden Valley.

Winemaking is meticulous yet experimental as shown by the pioneering work that Havens have done with Micro-Oxygenation - a technique that uses controlled long term exposure to oxygen to enhance the structure of tannins. Many of the new releases from Havens show the creamy tannin structure that is Michael's "textural signature"

New this year is the first release of Havens Reserve Syrah, sourced from the Hudson Vineyard T Block. A stunning wine that reflects the long, cool growing season of 1999, the Reserve Syrah shows immense concentration, high levels of extract and a complex palate of savoury, blackberry fruit overlaid with integrated toasty wood. Available in very small quantities, this must surely rank as one of the very top Syrahs in the U.S.

		Havens Napa Valley Merlot Rightly considered to be one of the best producers of Merlot in the Valley, Michael Havens used the cool growing conditions of the 1999 vintage to make his best wines to date. The merlot is multi layered with supple, fleshy fruit character with hints of cherries and plums coupled with spicy, well knitted wood character.
		Havens Napa Valley Syrah Decanter magazine rated Havens as one of the top ten U.S producers of Syrah recently and it is easy to see why. This wine has a dense core of spicy, blackcurrant and bramble fruit overlaid with nuances of coffee, chocolate and tobacco. Multi layered and very complex, this wine needs serious food to compliment it.
		Havens Hudson Vineyard Reserve Syrah The first release of this wine and a star in the making. Produced from one particular block of one of Michael Havens' favourite growers, this is an immense wine with a dense core of opaque, dark ripe fruit, voluminous, creamy tannins and wonderful hints of spice, cloves, chocolate, illy coffee and liquorice! Hugely complex and immensely long and most definitely one of the best examples of the variety anywhere in the world.
