HAVANA
HILLS
Tygerberg, South Africa
|
<< BACK |
www.havanahills.co.za
Situated
some 18kms from Cape Town and only 7kms from the Atlantic
Ocean, Havana Hills has been described by John Platter
as "one of the most spectacular wine farms in the
Cape".
Legend
has it that a herd of 50 elephants once roamed there
but today the virgin land has been cultivated to grow
the finest clones of classic grape varieties.
| Under
the perfect growing conditions that the benevolent
South African climate affords, the owner Kobus du
Plessis and winemaker Nico Vermeulen are able to
nurture grapes that attain full physiological ripeness
yet retain a certain elegance and restraint. |
|
 |
|
   |
|
In
the state-of-the-art cellar, Nico Vermeulen crafts
wines of great style. With Alain Mouiex (he of Pomerol
fame) consulting, Vermeulen makes approachable,
fruit driven wines under the Havana Hills label
whilst the highly praised Du Plessis Reserve range
shows power, concentration, structure and restraint-
a pleasing synergy of New World and Old World style.
|
|
| Despite
the relative youth of the project, Havana Hills
has garnered many awards including one of only 16
five star awards from the highly rated John Platter
guide. Numerous gold and double gold awards from
Veritas followed and more are set to come as the
new vineyards begin to show their mettle. |
|
 |
|
These wines are, for the time being, only released in
relatively small quantities in the U.K with no more
than 300 cases (12x75cl) being available of any one
variety. However, we are sure that they will meet with
great success, being at the vanguard of the new quality
South African movement.

Havana Hills Sauvignon Blanc
Utilising
Havana Hills proximity to the coast, this is a tangy,
grassy example with well rounded, tropical hints
to lend balance. Crisp yet full, this is great example
of stunning South African sauvignon. |
|
 |
|
Havana Hills Chardonnay
A
broad, rich chardonnay with ample tropical and citrus
fruit complimented by high quality French oak barrel
ageing. On the palate it is well balanced with a
gentle, slightly creamy texture and toasty nutty
wood. |
|
 |
|
Havana Hills Semillon Sauvignon Viognier
South
Africa is beginning to get to grips with the mercurial
Viognier grape variety and in this cunning blend
from Havana Hills it adds a haunting perfume of
peaches, violets and apricots to the zesty citrus
fruit of the Sauv/Sem blend. |
|
 |
|
Havana Hills Merlot
Well
concentrated Merlot with dark plum and damson fruit
character with touches of spice. Balanced, fleshy
and supple with savoury fruit on the palate coupled
with restrained oak influence. |
|
 |
|
Havana Hills Shiraz
Set
to be one of the stars of South Africa, Shiraz is
now beginning to make great wines in the Cape. This
is no exception with rich, spicy bramble and cassis
fruit with touches of pepper and spice. Creamily
textured with a powerful finish. |
|
 |
|
Havana Hills Lime Road 1481
Hints
of sweet vanilla and berry fruit from the Shiraz
grape is well integrated in this harmonious blend.
Subtly oaked for overall refinement. |
|
 |
|
Virgin Earth, Sauvignon Blanc
From
Kobus du Plessis' vineyard high in the Karoo this
is open, aromatic Sauvignon. Flavours of ripe tropical
guava and grapefruit and superb texture make this
a wonderful, easy drinking wine. |
|
 |
|
Virgin Earth, Chenin Blanc
Grown
high up in the Karoo this is a deliciously full
and ripe Chenin Blanc. Dry but with lovely weight
and complexity on the palate this has flavours of
ripe apples and spice with a long concentrated finish. |
|
 |
|
Virgin Earth, High Five
(5 Noble Varieties)
The
five noble varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet
Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot are grown
at high altitude to produce a wine that is deliciously
supple and scented, with splashes of vibrant ripe
fruit and spicy oak. |
|
 |
|
Virgin Earth, Pinotage
A
silky smooth example of South Africa's indigenous
grape variety. Full of ripe, spicy bramble and plum
fruit with hints of woodsmoke and vanilla adding
complexity. Well balanced, medium weight and elegant. |
|
 |
|
Havana Hills Du Plessis Reserve Cabernet Merlot
Only
in its second vintages but already one of the most
sought after wines in the Cape. With a host of medals
under its belt, this wine has little to prove but
yields up concentrated, well balanced cassis and
plum fruit with savoury, slightly herbal hints,
reminiscent of great Bordeaux. |
|
| |
|
 |
|
Havana Hills Du Plessis Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
A
powerful wine with deep, almost opaque colour and
a restrained nose of cassis, plums and hints of
tobacco and chocolate. Full and powerful, this wine
is hugely concentrated with a complexity that belies
its age. |
