Last
month we reported that Domaine A's Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 had
picked up a silver in the International Wine & Spirit
Competition 2008 Southern Hemisphere Wine Results. In fact it
was Silver - Best in Class.
Meanwhile
'Down Under' it's no surprise to learn that Majella are doing it
again. In the recent Adelaide Wine Show, their
2007 'The Musician' has been awarded The Montgomery Trophy for
Best Red Wine under $20 and 'The Malleea' was awarded the only Gold
Medal in it's class.
At
the Limestone Coast Wine Show, Majella's 2006 Cabernet was named ''Best
Cabernet Sauvignon' and 'Best Red Wine' and then went on to claim 'Best
Wine of Show'. Not to be outdone, Anthony Lynn, Majella's
viticulturalist also received the major award of the night, the Arthur
Hoffman Trophy for Viticulturalist of Best Wine of Show.
In
Italy, Feudo Montoni's Catarratto 2007 collected a Silver Medal in
Italy's 16th Concorso Internazionale Vini di Montagna, a competition
which awards wines from high-level vineyards with at least 30% slope.
Their Nero d'Avola Classico 2006 received an Honourable Mention.

Wine Spectator Insider
October 2008
Argentina, Viña Cobos
Malbec Mendoza Bramare Marchiori Vineyard 2006 - 92 points
Exotic and concentrated, with very lush fig sauce, blackberry and
boysenberry fruit layered with alluring mocha and bittersweet cocoa
notes. Long, fruit-driven finish has enough buried acidity for
balance. For the hedonist crowd. Drink now through 2011.
Cabernet Sauvignon Mendoza Bramare Marchiori Vineyard 2006 - 90 points
Rich, with a hefty dose of roasted vanilla and coffee leading the way
for a core of dark plum and braised fig notes. Muscular and toasty
through the full-bodied finish. For fans of the style. Best
from 2009 through 2011.
Malbec Lujan de Cuyo Bramare 2006 - 90 points
Dark and muscular, with a nice loamy undertow to the braised fig,
melted black licorice and raspberry ganache notes. Cocoa and
spice notes flitter through the mouthfulling finish. Drink now
through 2010.
Wine Spectator's 100-Point Scale: 90 - 94 points outstanding

Wine Spectator
October 2008
Wine
Spectator has rated Domaine Houchart the No. 1 Provence
Rosé in a listing of "Europe's Best Value Wines." It was chosen
out of 200 wines for exemplifying a philosophy which is "powered by
technological modernisation in the cellar, giving greater attention to
quality grape growing in the vineyard and the fierce competition of the
world market." As such, Domaine Houchart should be your first
stop in search of a distinctive, value driven Rosé perfected
in the terroir of Provence.

2007 Vinho Verde, Quinta da Aveleda - 92 points
Ever
since the Guedes family decided to put their best selection of
loureiro, trajadura and alvarinho into their quinta wine, the quality
has risen dramatically. This 2007 is full of fruit, a lasting
peach flavour targetted with laserlike acidity through the finish.
It has the bite of salty ocean air and a lot of zing.

Wine & Spirits Magazine
October 2008
Best of the Month ...
Valle Cupa IGT Salento Rosso 2003, Apollonio, Italy
Rich, moreish, leather and cherry with vibrant juicy depths and plenty of structure from Southern Italy.
Value for Money Wines ...
Nostros Pinot Noir Reserva 2007, Indomita, Casablanca Valley, Chile
Juicy Pinot fruit with great typicity, body and structure - and in screwcap! Good Pinot at a bargain price.
Rioja Blanco 2004, Remelluri, Spain
White Rioja rarely gets me excited but Remelluri has a host of
interesting varieties to play with. This is an aromatic blend
reminiscent of a northern Rhône white.
Cabernet Sauvignon Domaine A 1999, Tasmania
Bordeaux with a Tassie twist. Serve this wine as it changes people's perceptions of what Australian wine can be.

November 2008
Enter the Cult, by Anthony Quinn
...
there are those wines that seem to enjoy their own privte cult of
reverence - the wine that's the equivalent of a secret handshake.
Condrieu, one of the great "insider" wines ... and very little of
it about. Yves Cuilleron produces a variety of condrieus - La
Petite Côte, which spends 9 months in barrels is light in texture
and a perfect wine to serve with a first-course salad.
