Matthew Jukes 100 Best Australian Wines 2008
2007 PHI Sauvignon Blanc, Lusatia Park, Yarra Valley
As piercing as a chilled ice pick thwacked neatly through the cranium,
PHI Sauvignon does a few unusual things to your person when you taste
it. Firstly, everything seems to slow down dramatically. You then
find that your senses are all somehow ten times more alert than normal.
You are able to taste every single perfectly grown grape individually
as it luges across your taste buds wowing every one of them as they
speed by. You feel strangely aroused, and, in addition, throughout all
of this your friends will tell you that you've been grinning like a
simpleton.
2006 PHI Chardonnay, Lusatia Park, Yarra Valley
This
is another splendid Chardonnay that has perfected the art of seeming
completely calm and unruffled on the outside but beneath the facade
there is a mass of highly tuned flavours and extreme minerality that
all work seamlessly together in doing just one thing - knocking your
palate over with its titanium bowling ball of fruit.
2006 PHI Pinot Noir, Lusatia Park, Yarra Valley
PHI
'O6 is a heart-achingly beautiful wine with a pale hue and a
desperately attractive nose of wild strawbs and red cherries. The
texture seems perhaps a little too ethereal initially, but it builds
and builds and from a very quiet initial squirt of flavour a torrent
ensues and this bathes your entire olfactory system in heraldic joy.
And the finish will take you all of the way into 2009.
2006 Majella, The Musician, Coonawarra
The
silver medal the Musician won in last year's The Great Australia Red
competition has helped to thrust this wine under more people's noses
and this is a good thing, because the Cab/Shiraz blend is a historic
one and yet most of the best examples of this style of wine cost a
bomb. Majella's excellent creation though will blow you away and leave
you enough spare change for a rematch.
2004 Majella, The Malleea, Coonawarra
There
is a tannin alert on this wine and so you must taste it with a
pre-furrowed brow to save time later. Now that you are prepared, slip
into the wine without making a ripple and then do a few lengths and
obligatory tumble turns. See it's not so bad with your shoulders
under! It always takes a while to acclimatise to The Malleea, but once
you are in the zone it is very difficult to leave.

Wine Spectator Reviews of 2006 Garden Series
23 April 2008
Lily's Garden 2006
93 points
Shows
some subtlety, sliding its juicy blackberry and plum fruit through a
veil of fine-grained tannins, with pepper and mineral overtones.
Has a deft sense of harmony and balance. Best from 2010
through 2016.
Max's Garden 2006
92 points
A
wine of finesse, this strikes an enticing balance between crisp tannins
and the supple, generous texture underneath, sporting gorgeous
blueberry, blackberry and plum fruit that picks up hints of red pepper
and garrigue as the finish lingers. Drink now through 2016.
Sophie's Garden 2006
91 points
Silky,
open-textured and utterly beguiling for its exuberant raspberry and
plum fruit, sailing smoothly over the tannins in pinpoint balance.
Picks up savoury notes as the finish persists. Drink now through
2014.
Harry & Edward's Garden 2006
90 points
Brash
and bold. A juicy mouthful of molasses-accented plum and
blackberry fruit that feels fresher than most Langhorne Creek Shiraz,
hovering beautifully over the deft finish. Drink now through 2014.

Robert Parker Reviews of Uccelliera
May 2008
Rosso di Montalcino 2006, Rating 90
Cortonesi's 2006 Rosso di Montalcino is a serious wine. This
plush, deep Rosso exudes terrific energy in its plush, dark fruit,
minerals, tar and smoke, with outstanding balance and an utterly
irresistible personality. Coronesi typically blends a fair amount
of run-off juice from his Brunello into the Rosso, which gives this
wine an extra level of depth and complexity compared to most Rossos on
the market. Anticipated maturity 2008-2011.
Brunello di Montalcino 2003, Rating 92
The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is very representative of the house
style in its intense expression of ripe dark fruit, menthol, leather,
chocolate and spices. It offers superb richness and depth, with
notable complexity for a wine of its size. Another year of
bottle age should help smooth the tannins yet I wouldn't wait too long
to drink this wine, as it will likely offer its best drinking
relatively early. Anticipated maturity 2009-2016.
Rapace IGT 2005, Rating 91
Perfumed, spiced aromatics lead to layers of sweet, dark fruit that
unfold with uncommon grace and elegance in the 2005 Rapace. This
medium to full-bodied wine literally sparkles on the palate with
vibrant black cherries, species and toasted oak. Sweet notes of
licorice, tar and underbrush linger on the long, fresh finish. It
is a remarkably complex and nuanced win in this less than stellar
vintage. Anticipated maturity 2008-2017. |

Raats finds himself a new lair
South
African producer Bruwer Raats has been added to Alliance Wine. The
Raats Family Wines in the London on-trade will continue to be
distributed through Genesis Wines.
The Stellenbosch producer is
currently celebrating a good showing in April's issue of Wine
Spectator, in which his Chenin Blanc scored 91 points for the fourth
year running. Meanwhile, the winery's MR Compostella 2005, a joint
venture with rising star winemaker Mzokhona Mvemve, was the
highest-ranked Bordeaux blend from South Africa, repeating the success
of the maiden 2004 vintage by scoring 93 points.

Chateau Ka, Nuit Blanche 2007, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon
A
ground-breaking blend from the most exciting new Lebanese producer.
Fermented in new oak, this has delicious spicy apricot on the
nose with a rich, creamy plate.
A Chardonnay, Muscat and Viognier blend, with heady, sweet aromas and
nice breadth on the palate. Unusual. Perfect with mezze.

Decanter Wine of the Month
June 2008
Lalla Gully Riesling 2006
If not quite a Tasmanian devil, this is certainly no shrinking violet.
The nose is piercing and vivacious with uplifting citrus zest
aromas. Mouth-wateringly refreshing, there's a defined poise to
the palate, which boasts a lovely combination of minerality and limey
fruit. Up to 3 years |

With beautiful minerality and balanced acidity, this is very fresh on the palate.
