The International Wine Challenge 2008 Trophy Winners - the most exceptional wines of their type
Last
month 267 wines were awarded gold medals and International Wine
Challenge recently announced 90 wines which, after a further vigorous
blind tasting, have been elevated from gold medal to trophy status.
Congratulations to Majella who, having won Gold at this year's IWC have gone on
to scoop no less
than 4 trophies: International Cabernet Trophy, Australian Red Trophy,
South Australian Red Trophy and Coonawarra Trophy. A magnificent
achievement for Majella, who have won Best Australian and Best
Coonawarra red 2 years running.
New Austrian producer, Domaine Wachau, coming to Alliance soon
also picked up 2 trophies, and we look forward to welcoming them
on-board.

PHI, Lusatia Park Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Yarra Valley - 18 points
I am told this is the most expensive Sauvignon Blanc in Australia but
is always the first of these wines to sell out and I am not remotely
surprised. The 2006 was also impressive. It's aromatic and
minerally and reductively sulfidey but really exciting and tense.
High up the Yarra Valley, this vineyard shared with Shelmerdine
is obviously relatively cool and full of character.
Drink 2008 - 2010.
PHI, Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2006, Yarra Valley - 17.5 points
This
tastes almost disconcertingly like the Sauvignon, so strong is the
character of the vineyard. Very tight and fine and on the finish
there's sensation akin to licking chalk (although the vineyard soils
are apparently light red volcanic basalt in fact). Needs a bit of
time to unwind. From 20 year old vines. Drink 2010 - 2015.
PHI, Lusatia Park Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006, Yarra Valley - 15.5 points
Maybe this will get there eventually but for the moment it's
uncomfortably raw and simple without any old vine character.
Marked acidity and harshness on the palate. I preferred the
Shelmerdine version from another part of the vineyard. Drink 2010
- 2014.
Shelmerdine Sauvignon Blanc 2006, Yarra Valley - 16.5 points
Green fruit flavours with unusual lusciousness and appetite-whetting
quality on the palate. Bone dry and extremely distinctive.
Drink 2007 - 2009.
Shelmerdine Viognier 2007, Heathcote - 15.5 points
Round, sweet and overwhelmed by its rather obvious fragrance. Not enough substance on the palate. Drink 2008.
Shelmerdine Chardonnay 2005, Yarra Valley - 17 points
Underpriced. Very fine, very cool climate, slightly reductive but
extremely well made and sleek. Rewarding. An excellent example of
the new generation of Australian Chardonnay.
Drink 2007 - 2010.
Shelmerdine Pinot Noir 2006, Yarra Valley - 16 points
From the same vineyard as PHI Pinot but the vines are less close
spaced. I actually preferred this version with its slightly
vegetal nose and much looser, more comfortable texure.
Drink 2007 - 2010.
Shelmerdine Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, Heathcote - 16.5 points
Very sophisticated and elegant. Rich and complete and not forced.
Lively and long and already a pleasure to drink. Drink 2007
- 2010.

In praise of Majella's The Musician Cabernet Shiraz 2007

This
is a lovely release. It tastes of eucalypt and blackcurrants,
plums and malt and both its slippery texture and hearty, dark,
medium-weight fruitiness are pretty much spot on. I thought this
tasted good at the tasting bench and so served it to some folks later
at dinner and it was roundly praised - always a good sign. Drink
2008 - 2011.

Points
almost do wines like this an injustice. They're for drinking, not
dissecting or ponitificating on. Once again, it is all about
fruit - sexy, rich fruit just kissed by oak and wrapped up in a
chocolately veneer. There's bugger all tannin to speak of and it
slides around the mouth (and down the throat) with insane ease.
It's another Majella winner, and (excuse the poetry) priced to
please. Drink 2008 - 2011.

South Australian Wine Graces the Lips of Sex and the City Stars
The Sex and the City movie features a cameo appearance by Australian shiraz producer Two Hands.
Harry and Edward's Garden Langhorne Creek Shiraz from Two Hands Wines'
Garden Series, appears in a restaurant scene with Carrie and Miranda
(played by Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon) about three quarters
through the movie.
Carrie and Miranda order a bottle of shiraz and the waitress brings
them a bottle of the Two Hands wine. When the wine is placed on
the table, the Two Hands Wines logo can be seen.
"It's our understanding the film producer had tasted our wines
previously and requested a bottle to appear in the movie. They
requested a cork-sealed wine in case the shoot required the pulling or
showing of a cork so Two Hands Harry & Edward's Garden Shiraz was
sent. They couldn't have picked a more appropriate wine."
said co proprietor of Two Hands Wines, Richard Mintz.
