The 5th Annual Wines of Chile Awards
January 2008
Botalcura Awarded "Chile's Most Innovative Wine Style"
'Once
again the winery has confirmed the quality of its wines in the "Wines
of Chile Innovation Awards". Worldwide distinguished journalists,
writers and businessmen from the world of wine, recognised Botalcura
Winery's innovative positioning, in the first version of the
Wines of Chile Innovation Awards 2007, which took place in London last
December. Dan Jago, Purchasing Manager for Tesco, Peter Richards, wine
writer and Graham Holter, from William Reed Publishing, among others,
distinguished Botalcura winery as "Chile's Most Innovative Wine Style".
The job carried out by the winemaking team, headed by Philippe
Debrus, and their challenge to have the first Nebbiolo of the country
in their product portfolio , are the main reasons that lead the
selected jury to choose Botalcura ahead of other Chilean wineries.
Nebbiolo 2005 - a variety that will be officially launched by the first
semester of 2008 - comes from the Maule Valley and was described by the
judges as an elegant, solemn and very fresh, fruit wine, in a unique
and different style that perfectly reflects Chile's diversity.
"It is very stimulating to receive this distinction, it allows us to
validate that we are on the right way; offering out consumers
innovative, unique, attractive and different wines", says Philippe
Debrus.'

The Wine Advocate
By Robert ParkerJanuary 2008
Zuccardi Zeta 2003
92 Points
‘It
is a blend of 60% Malbec and 40% Tempranillo aged for 14 months in new
French (for the Malbec) and American (for the Tempranillo) oak...Purple
coloured, it has a complex perfume of violets, mineral, tobacco, saddle
leather, cassis, plum, blueberry and blackberry. This leads to a plush,
medium-bodied wine with mouth-filling fruit, sweet tannins, spicy red
and black fruit flavours, and a very long finish.'
Malamado Malbec 2003
90 Points
‘The
2003 Malamado Malbec is purple-coloured, exhibiting an attractive nose
of plum, blueberry compote, dried figs, and nuts. The wine is
full-bodied, sweet, rich and full-flavoured with additional notes of
cinnamon, almonds, and black fruits emerging on the palate. Structured
and well-balanced....'
Q Malbec 2004
90 Points
‘The
2004 Q Malbec was aged for 12 months in new French oak. Inky
purple-coloured, it offers up aromas of pain grille, pepper, pencil
lead, black cherry and blueberry. Elegantly styled, this medium-bodied
wine has a smooth texture, excellent grip, enough well-concealed tannin
to support several years of bottle age, and a long, pure finish. It
should drink well through 2020....'
Q Chardonnay 2006
89 Points
‘The
2006 Q Chardonnay was barrel-fermented in French oak and aged sur-lie
for 6 months. Light gold in colour with a slight green tint, it
presents aromas of smoke, butterscotch, pear and apple. Medium-bodied,
on the palate some tropical flavours emerge buttressed by crisp acidity
and excellent concentration. The finish is lengthy and fruit-filled.
This first-class Chardonnay can be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years ....'
Q Tempranillo 2004
88 Points
‘The
2004 Q Tempranillo, a wine aged for 12 months in American oak. Dark
ruby-coloured, it has an aromatic array of cedar, tobacco, spice box,
mulberry and blackberry. Medium-bodied, it offers ripe fruit with soft
tannins upon entry with plenty of spicy red and black fruit flavours.
This wine will provide satisfying drinking over the next 8 years ....'

PHI Yarra Valley
A
very exciting join venture between Shelmerdine (see below) who provide
these super cool vineyards and De Bortoli who provide talented
winemaker Steve Webber.
PHI, Lusatia Park Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2007 Yarra Valley
18 Points 2008-10
'I
am told this is the most expensive Sauvignon Blanc in Australia but is
always the first of these wines to sell out and I am not remotely
surprised. The 2006 was also impressive. It's aromatic and minerally
and reductively sulfidey but really exciting and tense. High up the
Yarra Valley, this vineyard shared with the Shelmerdine label is
obviously cool and full of character. 12%'
PHI, Lusatia Park Vineyard Chardonnay 2006 Yarra Valley
17.5 Points 2010-2015
'This
tastes almost disconcertingly like the Sauvignon, so strong is the
character of the vineyard. Very tight and fine and on the finish
there's a sensation akin to licking chalk (although the vineyard soils
are apparently light red volcanic baslat in fact). From 20 year old
vines. 13%'

Shelmerdine Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Yarra Valley
16.5 Points Drink 2007-2009
'Green
fruit flavours with unusual lusciouness and appetite-whetting quality
on the palate. Bone dry and extremely distinctive. 13% '
Shelmerdine Viognier 2007 Heathcote
15.5 Points Drink 2008
'Round, sweet and overwhelmed by its rather obvious fragrance. 14.5%'

South African Chenin Blanc
Raats Chenin Blanc 2006 *****
‘Heaven.
It's silky, pure, dry, glows quietly; taking a sip feels like being in
a room with someone who's at ease with themselves. Plus a caress of oak
(20% spends time in wood), enough to give gentle ballast and add detail
without interfering.
Thanks to the judicious approach to oak, drinks well without food but
good with crustaceans served hot or cold with lemony mayo.’
