CILLAR DE SILOS
Ribera Del Duero, Spain

Our quest for a new producer in this esteemed region had been a long one and was strewn with reminders that exalted reputations don't always mean lovely, drinkable wines.

Yes, there's lots of impressive wines in Ribera, bristling with robust tannins, high acidity and lots of wood but when will you drink them? Almost stumbling accross Cillar de Silos was a revelation - ok, so these are not beaujolais styled wines but the robust nature of the fruit is massaged into a structure that seduces the palate, caressing the tongue with an almost velvet texture. Fermentation in barrel must have a lot to do with achieving this effect but equally the initial quality of the fruit is of vital importance.

Cillar de Silos' 48ha of vineyards are situated in the areas of Quintano del Pidio and Gumiel de Mercado. Nestling amongst the forests and on the slopes, these vines produce yields no higher than 3.5 tonnes per hectare, ensuring fully ripened fruit and, in turn, produce wines with a rich textural glove of ripe fruit and sweet, integrated oak.

Cillar de Silos Rosado
Imagine crushing ultra ripe strawberries then macerating them in kirsch for a little while - well, that's what you're dealing with here. It's an explosion of ripe fruit counterbalanced nicely by some savoury elements to provide balance and interest.

Cillar de Silos El Curato Joven Tinto
Ribera del Duero might have pretensions to be the finest region in Spain but too often the wines are impenetrable. Not here! Rich, dense, yet succulent dark berry fruits coupled with velvety texture and a spicy finish.

    Cillar de Silos Crianza
Unlike many wines from Ribera, which suffer from a hardness that goes to the core, Cillar de Silos has great structure and firmness but it is swathed up in the silkiest of clothes. Low yielding vines, ripe fruit and then barrel fermentation and maturation all lead to a wine with great texture and charm. The fruit is creamy and strawberry led whilst the oak provides integrated savoury, smoky elementst to provide a superbly poised, thoroughly approachable example.
