BUIL & GINÉ
Priorat, Spain

Though winemaking is very much in the blood of the Buil & Giné families, it was only in 1996 that they decided to return to commercial winemaking after a gap of one generation.

Javier Buil is the driving force behind a new business that intends to not so much revolutionise the Priorat wine industry but certainly to bring back some commercial reality.

His Giné Giné Priorat has all the spice, mineral and fruit that one expects from the region but it also has youth, vibrancy and clean bright fruit that make this such an appealing style. This is a truly innovative, forward thinking producer with the drive and passion to bring Priorat to the wider market.

Priorat is a justifiably important area for quality wine production and its reputation has been enhanced by huge accolades from the press and its close proximity to the wealthy city of Barcelona.

Its natural resources play an important role in the style and quality of the wines produced but it is not a resource that comes cheap.

The classic soils of Priorat - the slate, shale and liquorella - are poor soils for vigour but excellent for restricting yield and production of powerful, characterful wines. Couple to this, the steepness of some of the slopes has to be seen to be believed - some even need ladders to climb and harvest from them. Vines literally cling to the side of the hills!

As a result, Priorat wines have the reputation of being expensive, almost unapproachable for the regular consumer. However, Javier Buil has a vision of producing wines at the top end but also wines that are not only more approachable when young but also affordable for the consumer.  To this effect, he is opening a major new winery close to the famed L'Ermita of Alvaros Palacios fame and his new vineyards are terraced in order to make them more workable. It is a huge project but it is one that we have to commend.

PRIORAT WINES

    Giné Giné Rosado
One of the most exciting Rose "finds" of the year, this blend of Grenache and Merlot offers up an enticing deep salmon pink colour combined with vibrant, juicy yet savoury red fruit on the nose. Rich, vinous and inviting on the palate with a huge array of ripe wild fruits.

    Giné Giné
A juicy, succulent style of Priorat with well balanced strawberry and violet scented fruit followed by a mid weight palate of supple, berry fruit.

    Joan Giné Giné
A brilliant introduction to the stunning wines of Priorat - this has the characteristic gout de terroir that comes from the slatey soils of the region couple with the ripe, herbal, savoury character that Garnacha and Carignan bring. Subtly oaked to give a softened, more creamy edge, this is a delicious glass!

    Pleret Blanc Dolc Late Harvest
A truly amazing dessert style wine from one of the most exciting producers in Priorat. A complex nose of candied citrus fruit, mint, bourbon, orange and vanilla is coupled with rich unctuous palate of honeyed fruit. The finish is crisp yet rich with amazing length and breadth.

    Pleret Negre Dolc Late Harvest
Late harvested Grenache, Carignan and Cabernet grapes are used to make this wonderful red dessert wine. Dark, rich and black with scented berry fruit and hints of chocolate. Similar to a Banyuls or a very light port, this is a stunning example of its type.

MONTSANT WINES

    Montsant 17-x1
The region of Montsant, lie close to the much revered Priorat D.O.C and in recent years has been discovered as a source of highly characterful, rich reds. Using Carignan and Garnacha, this is deep, rich and savoury with touches of liquorice and damson fruit.

    Baboix Montsat
Xavi Buil's top wine from the region of Montsant (neighbouring Priorat) is a real tour de force. Old vine Garnacha, Carignan, Cabernet and Merlot combine to produce a dense, concentrated red with huge quantities of spicy, liquoricey black fruit which blends with the sweet toasty oak to make for an outstanding wine.
