The region of Rioja is notorious for the fluctuations that can take place in both availability and pricing so when we went searching for a producer that could deliver us stability on both counts, we had to look for someone who controlled their own vineyards. This, in turn, means that no-one is totally beholden to the market and that long term pricing decisions can be made.

Upon visiting Bodegas Fernandez de Manzanos, it was immediately obvious that these were an ambitious couple, keen to expand their horizons, to utilise their 100ha of vineyards and to deliver consistent, great value wines. Victor's grandfather, Lorenzo, set up the bodega in the town of Azagra in 1890 and it has steadily grown ever since, albeit with a few growth spurts at various times. Victor's wife, Guillermina, joined the family business having been a lawyer previously. Together they have accelerated the pace of growth and in 2002, they began construction of an ambitious new cellar in Azagra.

Together, they appear to be doing much of the work themselves (in between harvests!) and have created an impressive new facility that, when finished, will not only enable them to grow production but also to benefit from the growing eco-tourism market. Included in the build is a hotel which will no doubt become a popular stop off point for weary wine trade professionals after a hard day's tasting!

		Rioja Joven A bright, juicy red with soft, supple blackberry fruit and a silky texture. Well balanced with hints of violets and spice.
		Rioja Crianza Sourced from the family run vineyards close to the winery in Azagra, this Crianza benefits from 18 months careful storage in oak and in bottle. The resulting wine is silky soft, mellow and savoury with hints of red berries and dried fruits.
