Situated in Villabuena in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, Bodegas Luis Cañas is ideally placed to make great wine. Careful work in the vineyards and in the winery ensures that this potential is optimised.

Producing around 1.5 million bottles per year the estate controls 120 hectares of vineyards and holds ISO 9002 for the winery and bottling plant.

The area around Villabuena has broken clay soils over limestone on which Tempranillo ripens excellently. High, in the north of the region, very cold winters are followed by warm, dry summers.

Luis Cañas uses around 95% of Tempranillo in most red wines blended with a small proportion of Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha.

Whites are exclusively Viura and are produced both unoaked and barrel fermented.

Fermentation temperatures are carefully followed to capture the best qualities of the fruit. French and American oak is used for carefully supervised maturation in temperature and humidity controlled cellars. Winemaking here combines the best of traditional knowledge and technical know-how.

Luis Cañas produces wines that have the typical elegance of the Rioja Alavesa, excellent fruit and wonderful, complex layers of flavours.

		Rioja Blanco Joven, Luis Canas A youthful, vibrantly crisp white made from Rioja's viura grape variety. Attractive, lemon character with a well rounded finish of melon and pineapple.
		Rioja Rosado Joven, Luis Canas Enticing salmon pink colour with hints of bramble and rose hip on the nose. The palate is fresh, crisp and juicy with touches of strawberry and bramble followed by a mouthwatering finish
		Rioja Blanco, "Barrel Fermented" Luis Canas Refreshing barrel fermented Rioja, made from the fashionable Viura grape variety. Toasty on the nose with hints of citrus fruit followed by freshness and a good structured finish.
		Rioja Oak Aged Young Red, Luis Canas Luis Canas have shot to fame in the last few years for their modern yet typical Riojas and this new addition to the family is set to be just as popular. Spending 5 months in wood, it doesn’t quite qualify as crianza but less oak means singing fruit! Soft, smoky, juicy and very moreish
		Rioja, Crianza Luis Canas Twelve months oak ageing gives a little complexity and softens the wine - yielding a well balanced ripe fruited wine with a soft, sweetish oak finish. This is also available in 50cl bottles.
		Rioja Reserva, Bodegas Luis Canas Produced from the finest vintages, Luis Canas Reserva is aged in oak to give a mellow but complex and full flavoured red.
		Rioja Reserva "Seleccion de la Familia" A reserva wine specially selected to represent the epitome of great Rioja. Dark garnet red colour with a pronounced bouquet of ripe strawberries and plums. Deep, rich and savoury on the palate showing well integrated tannins, elegant, silky fruit and subtle oak.
		Luis Canas "Amaren" Rioja Reserva Especial A tribute to their late mother, Amaren is the flagship wine of Luis Canas and represents the cutting edge of Riojan winemaking. Produced from low yielding, very old Tempranillo vines, Amaren is surprisingly soft and approachable with ripe wild strawberry and cassis fruit coupled with vanilla and spice from oak ageing in American and French wood.
		Luis Canas, Rioja Gran Reserva Luis Canas' reputation has grown immensely in the past 5 years with a string of recommendations from worthy journals. Their Gran Reserva is a complex, well structured wine with ripe wild strawberry fruit overlaid with spicy, never domineering, oak flavours. Rich, meaty yet elegant - a very true representation of what made Rioja great.
		Luis Canas, Hiru 3 Racimos Luis Canas have made huge progress in recent years and have quite rightly been richly awarded for doing so. No wine in the Rioja region has been as bestowed with praise as Hiru 3 Racimos - last year it won the Decanter Trophy for best Tempranillo in the world! Hiru is made from vines that produce only three immensely concentrated bunches, the grapes are then hand selected and fermented. After barrel ageing, the wine emerges a glorious black colour with hints of wild berry fruit, grilled meats and spice. The palate is huge, groaning with fruit, oak, rich tannins and immense length.
