BODEGAS
LUIS CAÑAS
Rioja, Spain |

www.luiscanas.com

Bodegas Luis Cañas has been at the heart of Rioja Alavesa since 1928, and the passion, care and attention to detail is evident in the quality of the wines.
A Family Affair
Luis Cañas has, since 1928, been crafting wines of outstanding quality and since the 1970s has been one of the most go ahead and progressive wineries in the region.
Originally established by Luis Cañas and his wife Angeles, their son Juan Luis Cañas took over management of the winery in 1989, and since then has continued the family tradition by adding new wines to the portfolio, and just recently creating the wines of Bodegas Amaren.
 |
|
Luis is still involved in the winery, now 83 he stands at the head of the selection table each harvest keenly ensuring only the best parcels of grapes are used! |
|
The Luis Cañas range is now very much associated with the original owner himself, these are the paternal wines which demonstrate all the potential of Rioja.
Perfectly Situated
Situated in Villabuena, Luis Cañas is perfectly situated to make great wine. The climate here provides cold winters to give the vine a much needed rest while very warm summers produce healthy, ripe flavour packed grapes.
| The
area around Villabuena has broken clay soils over
limestone on which Tempranillo ripens excellently.

It all happens in the Vineyard
One of the fundamental philosophies of Luis Cañas is that the best wines can only be obtained from the best possible grapes - and this begins and ends in the vineyards.
With 310 hectares of outstanding vinyards, split across 815 different plots, the viticultural department control every aspect. Each of the plots is catagorised and according to its characteristics will be used for different wines, each with their own personality.
The vineyards supply Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Viura grapes which are then selected and crafted, using a combination of modern technology and traditional know-how, into a range of fine Riojas.
Fermentation
temperatures are carefully followed to capture the best
qualities of the fruit. French and American oak is used
for carefully supervised maturation in temperature and
humidity controlled cellars.
The end result delivers wines which are consistently packed with fruit and wrapped in a silky, oak laced layer of flavour that seems unique to Rioja - truly world class.

Blanco
A
youthful, vibrantly crisp white made from Rioja's
Viura grape variety. Attractive, lemon character
with a well rounded finish of melon and pineapple. |

|
 |
|
Blanco Fermentado en Barrica
A beautifully balanced example of white Rioja that straddles the styles of the old and the new. Vibrant citrussy Viura is blended with the more weighty Malvasia ad the brief barrel maturation adds a honeyed roundness to the crisp lemony fruit. |

Oak Aged Red
This juicy, young red is bursting with fruit aromas from start to finish. The oak lends soft, smoky hints, which combined with the singing fruit delivers a stunning, very moreish, young Rioja. |
|
 |
|
Crianza
Twelve months oak ageing gives a
little complexity and softens the wine - yielding
a well balanced ripe fruited wine with a soft, sweetish
oak finish. Intense spice and oak on layers of velvety cherry fruit and a slight hint of licquorice, with lasting rich fruit flavours and smooth round tannins. |

Hiru 3 Racimos
Hiru is made from vines that produce
only three immensely concentrated bunches, the
grapes are then hand selected and fermented. After
barrel ageing, the wine emerges a glorious
black colour with hints of wild berry fruit, grilled
meats and spice. The palate is huge, groaning
with fruit, oak, rich tannins and immense
length.
