ALVAREZ Y DIEZ
Rueda, Spain |
<< BACK |
www.alvarezydiez.com
The Rueda region has come a long way in a very short time - mirroring the tumultuous growth that has been seen in much of the Spanish wine industry. Rueda was previously known for the oxidised, sherry like wines made from the local Verdejo grape variety but today it is the driving force behind the modernising of the image of Spanish white wines.
Few companies have done more to promote the wines of Rueda than Alvarez y Diez, based in the town of Nava del Rey, close to Valladolid. Brother's Alvaro and Juan de Benito inherited the company from their father who in turn had bought the company as a result of purchasing wine from it as xmas gifts for his stockbroking clients. When he took it over it was producing the Rueda wines of old - heavy, oxidised and sherry like - a far cry from the wines of today.

Under the careful nurturing of Alvaro and Juan, Alvarez y Diez moved its well known Mantel Blanco brand towards the emerging, more modern style of wine and began to see an increasing public interest in the white wines of Spain. Today, Alvarez y Diez are amongst the leading lights of the region, producing textbook examples of modern, crisp, herbaceous verdejo and varietally pure sauvignon blanc as well as superb value viura verdejo blends - Rueda seems to be the only region to coax much flavour out of the aroma-shy viura grape! |

After the huge successes that Alliance has had with the sister producer, Ermita Veracruz, we are delighted to be able to bring them all together under one roof and go out and preach the word about how good Spanish whites can be....

Mantel
Blanco Verdejo / Sauvignon, Rueda
The
Rueda region of Spain is making the country's
raciest, most exciting white wines. This is
potent, pungent stuff, filled with intense
herbaceous, tropical fruit notes and crisp
mouthwatering acidity. Electrifyingly brilliant,
leaving the tongue tingling! |

Mantel
Blanco Sauvignon Blanc, Rueda
Challenging
the Kiwis for the title of best value Sauvignon
Blanc was not something that Spain would have considered
10 years ago, let alone 20. However, with the emergence
of the Rueda region for white wines, Spanish Sauvignon
and more particularly this one, are now mounting
a real challenge. Great varietal character - crisp,
herbaceous, touches of blackcurrant leaf, guava
and grapefruit all backed up by racy acidity lead
to a tongue tinglingly taught finish. |

Monte
Alina Verdejo / Viura
A
splendidly spritzy, lively white with fresh grassy,
tropical fruit aromas and beautifully aromatic
palate. This is a stunning example of the modern,
pungent new world style that Spain is now producing.

Valmoro Toro
The Toro region has a reputation for making some of Spain's best reds and now that the rather robust tannins are being handled better there has never been a better time to try them. Alvarez & Diez' brilliance for making white wines has not hindered them in making a superb, modern example of Toro. This is full bodied but relatively soft and creamy with dark ripe fruit, hints of chocolate and tobacco. Stunning! |
