Abadal wines are produced in the El Bages region of Spain; Bages is a derivative of Bacchus, the name of the Roman God of wine. The unique personality and character of the Pla de Bages wines are a result of the microclimate; the low rainfall, the hilly terroir and the substantial variation in temperatures. Founded in 1983 and located north-west of Barcelona, the Abadal wines are hand-picked and of course estate bottled.
The vineyards are surrounded by pine trees and enjoy stunning views of the Pyrenees. Aging of the wines takes place mostly in French oak but some American and Slovenian oak barrels are also used.
The quality of the wines can be attributed to the range of grape varieties used, all of which are recognised internationally, particularly Picapoll, which is native to the area and should be enjoyed with shellfish.

Picapoll, Abadal Wines
The quirky Picapol variety is found throughout Southern France and in small pockets of North Eastern Spain where it produces, crisp, dry, citrussy wines not unlike the great Albarino wines of Galicia.

Cabernet Franc/Tempranillo, Abadal Wines
Catalonians do things differently from the rest of Spain and in wine it is no different. Here the resolutely French Cabernet Franc variety is blended with Spain’s Tempranillo to give an intriguing, fragrant red with plenty of character.
