On the Crest of a New Spanish Wave

The results of the second annual New Wave Spanish Wine Awards were announced recently. A team of 16 judges led by Tim Atkin MW chose what they considered to be the top 100 Spanish wines available in the UK in 2006. We are very excited about the fantastic quality and value available from Spain, as demonstrated by the scope of our Spanish portfolio, and three wines imported by Alliance Wine were chosen for the top 100.

Torre Silo 2003 is the top wine from Cillar de Silos, a remarkable producer in the Ribera del Duero.

100% Tempranillo and partially fermented in barrel it has the structure of a great Ribera but with the creamy, fleshy style to make it wonderfully approachable.

Bodegas Remelluri could hardly be described as one of the bright young things of the Spanish wine industry. Since 1971 they have been producing outstanding Rioja from their organically farmed, low yielding, high altitude vineyards.

The Remelluri Rioja Reserva 2001 was chosen for the top 100 which just goes to prove that experience shows!

Bodegas Luis Canas are also not exactly newcomers having started production in 1928 but under the guidance of the latest generation of the family, Juan Luis Canas, the winery has a very forward looking and progressive atmosphere.

The wines are now recognised as some of the finest from the Rioja Alavesa, achieving the wonderful balance of fruit and oak that is unique to Rioja. Their Rioja Reserva 1999 was selected for the top 100.
