Collio is not perhaps a region as familiar as others in Italy but it deserves attention. An area of hills, steep slopes and a fresh climate in the north east of Italy, its’ winemakers embraced the glories of cool fermentation techniques early on to produce lively and fragrant white wines. The reds too have a lightness of touch and texture reminiscent of the Loire.
Tenuta La Ponca is in the far north of the region, situated against the mountains, and takes its name from the vineyard’s oceanic sandstone and marly soils. Their Sauvignon Blanc is rich and intensely scented, fantastic as an aperitif or with seafood.
Scolaris is a family producer using grapes from their own vineyards and grapes purchased from other families, many of whom they have been dealing with since the rebuilding of the region after the Great War. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and a raspberry scented Cabernet Franc are available now.
Chianti on the other hand is so well known that sometimes it is taken for granted and substandard wines are sold on the back of the region's reputation. Our mission though is to avoid the run of the mill and to shun the unexceptional. We think we have found you a couple of crackers here.
Castello di Meleto is like a Tuscan fairy tale. Standing at the end of a juniper and cypress lined avenue a kilometre from Gaiole in the heart of the Chianti Classico, surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and fields, the castle dates back to the 13th Century. Happily it doesn’t all go pumpkin shaped when it comes to the quality of the wines which are made in a modern, approachable and fruit filled style and stylishly packaged. Chianti Classico and a Chianti Classico Riserva are available now.
Mormoraia competes with Castello di Meleto for "most scenic supplier" (they both also have holiday apartments to rent by some strange coincidence!). While both are in Tuscany the ex-convent buildings of Mormoraia stand in the Colli Senesi with views over the town of San Gimignano and its extraordinary medieval towers. An intense, fresh and vibrant Vernaccia di San Gimignano and an ample, softly structured Chianti di Colli Senesi are available from here. Once again care in the vineyards, investment in the winery and great attention to detail throughout pay off in wines of lovely quality.
