France Refreshed

|
|
While some areas of our portfolio have seen major revamps, Australia for example and, more recently, Spain, France has remained relatively stable. This spring however we have turned our attention to Burgundy and the Rhône valley and have strengthened the ranges here with some exciting new names.
In Burgundy we have eschewed the mediocrity of negoce for the individuality and excellence of four new growers. |

Domaine Fichet Fichet, a family domaine in Igé in the Maconnais, is providing us with delicious, fresh and lively Macon Villages, Bourgogne Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Mi- Michel Prunier chel has been described by Serena Sutcliffe as "probably the signature Auxey domaine.you are in very safe hands here." As well as his Auxey-Duresses, look out for Beaune 1er Cru and Cremant de Bourgogne.

Now run by daughter Claire Naudin, Domaine Naudin Ferrand produces that very rare thing, excellent value red and white burgundy, from the family vineyards in the Hautes Cotes de Beaune and Cotes de Nuits. Based in Volnay, Domaine Bitouzet Prieur makes powerful, rich Meursault and similarly full Beaune and Volnay. |

Further south, in the Rhône, we have taken on three new producers. Domaine Clavel is one of the leading lights of St Gervais and from their 70 hectares of vines the family produce Côtes du Rhône full of character and ripe, spicy fruit.

Jean Luc Colombo will probably need little introduction. Having originally made a name for himself as a consultant winemaker his own wines now have a fantastic reputation and justifiably so. His Cornas and Crozes Hermitage are superb expressions of Syrah, concentrated and precisely crafted. Domaine Cuilleron is another recognised superstar of the northern Rhône. If you want to know what Condrieu should taste like then try his. His reds are not too shabby either! |
