Zen - Belfast

There may be some of you who can remember a book by Robert Pirsig called Zen And The Art of Motorcycle

Maintenance, which claims to change the way you think about your life. Zen, the restaurant could change the way you feel about eating out, for an evening at least.

According to The Irish News, Eddie Fung, proprietor, has created what is “possibly the most ambitious, courageous and expensive restaurant to have been conceived and built in Belfast”. “It marks a significant departure from his other mainstream Red Panda Chinese restaurants.” The interior needs to be seen to be believed, and Eddie’s imagination inspired by visits to Japan has created an exhilarating atmosphere. Eddie is just about to collect the best design award from Dublin based Theme magazine.

Now to the food and wine. There is a wide selection of Sushi, Sashimi, Tempura, Maki rolls, etc, so you can make your meal what you want it to be. Flavours are sharpened by soy and wasabi.

Although Zen boasts an extensive range of unusual spirits and cocktails, the selection of wines is truly eclectic. From a total of 44 bins, I am informed by Sean Teer, head barman, that customers tend to favour the more obscure varietals, such as spicy Gewurztraminer made by Sam Plunkett from Blackwood Ridge, Victoria. Also very popular is the Viognier from Santa Rosa, Argentina, which has rich apricot characteristics. The Unwooded Chardonnay, again from Blackwood Ridge seems to compliment delicate flavours without overpowering them.
