TED’S TROPHY WINES OF 2003

Robin a.k.a. “Ted” Nugent, Alliance’s Agency Sales Manager, takes his nickname from the extraordinary American heavy rock star, known for his passion for guns, hunting trophies and extremely loud noises. Robin, needless to say, is so unlike his namesake that it is kind of ironic. However he has been persuaded to go a-hunting himself and here, in no particular order, are his top ten trophy wines from 2003:

Suckfizzle Sauvignon Semillon 2001, Margaret River, WA
Complex, elegant, sophisticated – the antithesis of Ted Nugent?

Stella Bella Sangiovese Cabernet 2001, Margaret River, WA
Australia goes to Tuscany? Combines crowd pleasing fruit with complex black cherry and spice.

McGregor Chenin Blanc 2002, McGregor, South Africa
I can do good value too and this was perfect for pouring down thirsty guests this summer.

Bad Impersonator 2002, Barossa Shiraz, Two Hands Wines, South Australia
A couple of steps up the rung in the Two Hands range this balances elegance and power superbly.

Blewitt Springs Malbec 2002, Langhorne Creek, South Australia
Brett Howard doesn’t do shrinking violet wines. This is pretty forthright in its power and has great depth too.

Riesling Grillenparz 2002, Weingut Stadt Krems, Kremstal, Austria
Okay so Austria is one of the wine-trades private passions but wines like this show why it shouldn’t be.

The Wolf Riesling 2003, Two Hands Wines, South Australia
My name is Robin & I am a fan of quality Riesling. I also like screwcaps, as on this wine, which means I’m pretty much guaranteed I’ll get the fantastic flavours I’m expecting without cork taint!

Verdejo Veracruz 2002, Bodegas Veracruz, Rueda
Fresh, scintillating Verdejo. Fantastic for Chardonnay jaded palates.

Barbera d’Alba Mezzavilla 2001, Malabaila di Canale
Ripe, dark cherry flavoured wine from a producer whose first vintage was 1362 – slightly longer ago than some of our recent acquisitions!

Bourriquot 1998, Havens Wine Cellars, California
This Cabernet Franc Merlot blend is as stylish, long and simply delicious as they come.
